❓ What Is an APK?
APK (Android Package Kit) is the file format Android uses for distributing and installing mobile apps. Like a .exe on Windows or a .dmg on macOS, an APK is a package file that holds every component needed to install an Android app.
📋 Full Definition
An APK file is an archive file (similar to ZIP) that contains:
- 📄 Code: Compiled Java/Kotlin code in DEX (Dalvik Executable) format
- 🖼️ Resources: Images, layouts, strings, and UI elements
- 📱 Assets: Extra files such as databases, fonts, and videos
- 📜 Manifest: AndroidManifest.xml with app information and permissions
- 📚 Libraries: Native libraries (.so files) for different architectures
- 🔐 Certificate: Digital signature used to verify app authenticity
💡 Fun Fact
An APK file is really a ZIP archive with a different extension. You can extract its contents by renaming the extension to .zip and opening it like any ZIP file!
